The Ladera Sagrada Winery, founded in 1920, is located in Valdeorras in far northwestern Spain. Jose
Sotos is the principal owner and winemaker. Albino Fernandez is the vineyard manager and assistant
winemaker. With 62 acres, Ladera Sagrada is the largest vineyard owner in the region, all of it estate
owned. At 1,749 feet the vines are planted on soil composed of slate and granite topsoil with thin clay
subsoil. 90% of the vines are 25 plus years old and the vineyards are planted to two varietals, Godello and
Mencia. Some Godello vines are over 40 years old, the oldest in Valdeorras. The high altitude and the
cool temperatures provide a long ripening period, which results in more aromatics, more minerality and
fresher wines. The success of the wines is the combination of different soil profiles and microclimates.
