Ponzi Vineyards Pinot Gris 2012

Ponzi Vineyards Pinot Gris 750ml 2012
Sku: 22682

Founded in 1970 by Dick and Nancy Ponzi, Ponzi Vineyards has set the standard for viticultural innovation and winemaking excellence in Oregon. From the start, the family has practiced sustainable agriculture and its four estate vineyards – Abetina, Madrona, Aurora and Avellana are LIVE Certified Sustainable. In 1988, Robert Parker named Dick Ponzi as one of the finest winemakers in the world; only three other Americans have been so recognized. In 1994 Dick’s daughter Luisa took over primary winemaking responsibilities. Luisa apprenticed with Christophe Roumier of Domaine Roumier in Burgundy, France as well as with Luca Currado of Vietti in Piedmont, Italy. “There is a reputation behind our label that I want people to know they can count on.” ~ Winemaker Luisa Ponzi

Tasting notes
Fermented in stainless steel, the wine presents attractive aromas of apple and pear with mouth-watering flavors of lime, peach and mineral. Sweet fruit notes are balanced by bright acidity on the finish.

Wine Enthusiast 90 points (Oct 2013)
Ponzi thinks that the presence of old vines from her family’s estate vineyards is responsible for the flattering sense of textural creaminess to her 2012 Pinot Gris, reflecting an endearing potential of this grape variety that unfortunately rarely comes out in Oregonian renditions. (There was a small bit of malolactic on the 2011 but not here, so the creaminess has nothing to do with that.) Most of the non-estate fruit comes from the new winery’s northern Chehalem Mountains sector, but some also from the Eola Hills. Juicy pear, peach and apple are tinged with brown spices – along with citrus rind, peach kernel and pear pip that lend ping to the finish – and there is a disarming sense of buoyancy even at 13.3% alcohol. Plan to savor this fine value over the next 2-3 years.
 Wine Spectator 90 points (Sep 9 2013)
A fine effort in 2012, this clean and fresh Pinot Gris impresses with crisply defined flavors of jicama, white peach, pineapple and honeydew melon. Flavors are persistent and lightly kissed with vanilla through a lingering, lively finish.
Fresh and lively, with a distinct ginger root character weaving through the lime and pear fruit, finishing with snap and expression. Drink now. 13,000 cases made. From Oregon. H.S.

Technical notes
Estate Pinot Gris was supplemented with grapes sourced from high-quality local vineyards – Linda Vista, Gemini, Dion, Walnut Ridge, Ridge Road, Kraemer and Zenith.
