3 day lead-time required to confirm availability Why?

Mitolo Wines is a family owned business founded in 1999 by Frank and Simone Mitolo. With his Italian heritage and three generations of his family working as agriculturists, Frank set out to create wines of individuality, integrity and quality. Fruit is sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards located in McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley. The Willunga district vineyards, planted on heavy grey loam soil over sandstone, intermixed with black Biscay clay, are located on the southern tip of the McLaren Vale and the Greencock vineyard located in northern part of the Barossa Valley is planted on free draining loam over limestone. The focus is on Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Other varieties include Sangiovese and Vermentino. Winemaker Ben Glaetzer was born in Adelaide and began his career working as a cellar hand at Barossa Valley Estate and then as winemaker at Tyrrell’s. In 2001 Ben became a partner and since then Mitolo has gone from strength to strength.

Tasting notes
Aromas of black cherries, blackberries, mulberries and anise with hints baking spices and violets. Full-bodied and voluptuous, it is well structured with medium velvety tannins, juicy acidity and layers of spice on its lengthy finish.

Rating

Coming from a 60-year-old vineyard in Greenock, the 2009 Reiver Shiraz was matured for 14 months in oak hogsheads, 70% new and 90% French. It reveals a deep garnet-purple color and an intensely perfumed nose of black cherries, blackberries, mulberries, potpourri and anise over baking spices and violets. Full bodied and voluptuous in the mouth, it is elegantly structured with a medium level of velvety tannins and refreshing acidity, finishing long with plenty of spice layers. Approachable now, it should develop further and cellar to 2019+.

Polished, rich and generous with its cherry, boysenberry and dusky spice flavors, this finishes with a hint of espresso. Has depth and expression. Drink now through 2017. 150 cases imported. –HS

Mint marks the nose of this otherwise darkly attractive wine. Notes of mocha and plum nicely set up the wine, as do the supple tannins, but then there’s a jarring edge of prickly acidity that cuts across the palate and disrupts the flow. There are some nice parts here that don’t quite come together.

Technical notes
Alcohol: 14.9%

Other text
Named 'Reiver' for the border raiders of the Anglo-Scot borders. Throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries the border country was ravaged by lawless Reiver families in a vicious cycle of raid, reprisal and blood feud. Their allegiance was first to the family, the surname, not the crown, whether English or Scottish.
