Native 9 Pinot Noir 2010

Native 9 Pinot Noir 750ml 2010
Sku: 1840500

3 day lead-time required to confirm availability Why?

Native 9 is James Ontiveros’s own label, the name signifying that he is the ninth generation of farmers in California. He is a graduate of California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo with dual degrees in Fruit Science and Crop Science. The Pinot Noir is from his family’s 8-acre Rancho Ontiveros Vineyard, in Santa Maria Valley. The vineyard, which was planted in 1997 and 1998, is part of his family’s 400 acre property. The vineyard contains four different rootstocks and eight different Pinot Noir clones. Paul Wilkins, a college friend and former assistant winemaker at Alban Vineyard in Edna Valley, is the winemaker. Native 9 is made in small lots with a nod to both old world sensibilities and new world stylistic freedom.

Tasting notes
The wine offers aromas of blackcurrant, boysenberryand nutmeg. A richly-fruited, spicy palate impression of caraway, white pepper and saddle leather combines with a lengthy finish.

Wine Advocate 93 points (Aug 2013)
The 2010 Pinot Noir Rancho Ontiveros is beautiful. Deep, rich and textured, with loads of ripe berry fruit, saddle leather, underbrush, crushed stone-like minerality and spice, it hits the palate with a medium to full-bodied texture that carries lively acidity, beautiful focus and fantastic detail on grip on the finish. Tight and reserved, it needs another year or two to open up, but is impressive and should have 10-12 years or more of total longevity. Drink 2015-2022.

Technical notes
Swan and Pommard clones were destemmed and the remaining six clones (1A, 2A, 113, 114 and 115) were cofermented whole cluster on their skins for 13 days. Each lot was aged separately in French oak on the gross lees for 16 months and then blended to tank and returned to neutral oak barrels to mature for an additional five months.
